Abstract

The rapid population growth in Peru has led existing wastewater treatment plants to rely primarily on anaerobic treatment systems, as these require relatively small land areas. However, such systems often fail to meet the requirements established by current environmental regulations, making the implementation of an effective post-treatment process necessary. An ideal post-treatment system should provide high treatment efficiency while requiring minimal land area, low energy consumption, and reduced investment, operation, and maintenance costs (Geológica, 2009).

This study aimed to determine the efficiency of the Downflow Hanging Sponge (DHS) reactor technology for treating a portion of the domestic wastewater generated in the El Ángel and El Milagro communities, located in the Rímac district. In addition, the study evaluated the system's effects on physicochemical parameters and the microbiological parameter of thermotolerant coliforms throughout its operational period using statistical analysis. The results were compared with the Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) for Category 3 water and the Maximum Permissible Limits (MPL) for wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents established in Peru.

The pilot-scale system operated with an influent flow rate of 90 L/day, a hydraulic retention time of 1.5 hours, and a sponge porosity of 95.1%. Furthermore, compared with other secondary treatment technologies, the DHS system requires less operation and maintenance while providing effective wastewater treatment performance.
