Abstract
This study evaluates the internal validity of the research conducted by Ashraf and Galor (2011), which explains population density and economic development during the preindustrial period based on geographical, biogeographical, and Neolithic transition factors. By replicating the original econometric models and redefining the grouping variables for the countries of the Americas, the study examines the consistency of the results obtained under different sample specifications. The findings indicate that an alternative classification of countries into Anglo-America, Latin America, and the Caribbean slightly improves the explanatory power of the model without affecting the stability of the estimated coefficients. Nevertheless, the study identifies limitations related to the accuracy of the data on the Neolithic transition and questions the extent to which exclusively geographical explanations account for differences in economic development. It concludes that incorporating more representative regional groupings strengthens the model's internal validity and highlights the need to consider complementary historical and institutional factors in the analysis of economic growth.
